Weekly Devotion 247 – A MOMENT TO CHOOSE

A MOMENT TO CHOOSE

“The Angel of God Who went before the host of Israel moved and went before them: and the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them, coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. It was a cloud and darkness to the Egyptians, but it gave light by night to the Israelites; and the one host did not come near the other all night.” [Ex.14:19-20]

The renowned 19th Century sage, Rabbi Louis Ginsberg, made the following comment: “God caused the sea to go back by a strong east-wind. The wind he always makes use of when he chastises the nations. All night long God made it to blow over the sea. To prevent the enemy from inflicting harm upon the Israelites, He enveloped the Egyptians in profound darkness, so impenetrable it could be felt, and none could move or change his posture. He that sat when it fell could not arise from his place, and he that stood could not sit down. Nonetheless, the Egyptians could see that the Israelites were surrounded by bright light, and were enjoying a banquet where they stood, and when they tried to speed darts and arrows against them, the missiles were caught up by the cloud and by the angels hovering between the two camps, and no harm came to Israel.” (The Legends of the Jews)

God provided light to the Israelites, but it seemed like an impenetrable darkness to the Egyptians who had chosen darkness (evil) over light (good); the pillar of cloud was so close to them yet so far.

God’s presence covered the Israelites and protected them against their enemies even though they were unaware of it, and because of this they panicked believing they faced impending doom. Yet, God was fully in control. He never disappoints as the Israelites were soon to discover and in the same way He is with us too, Immanuel, even when we also face dire situations.

God’s presence goes before us today as it did with the Israelites over 3000 years ago. He is the Light of the World who declares that those who follow Him “…will not be walking in the dark, but will have the Light which is Life.” [John 8:12].

Whatever things we may be experiencing now, there will come the day soon when, as the prophet Zechariah declared, “… one day, known to Adonai, (there) will be neither day nor night… 8 On that day, fresh water will flow out from Yerushalayim, half toward the eastern sea and half toward the western sea, both summer and winter. 9 Then Adonai will be king over the whole world. On that day Adonai will be the only one, and his name will be the only name.” (ch.14)

If today you are feeling like the Israelites did when they were surrounded by the Egyptians with no way of escape, choose the One who supplies all our needs according to His riches in Messiah Yeshua! (Phil. 4:19)
